What it measures
Who shares scenes with whom, drawn as a network. It shows which characters hold the cast together, which ones link otherwise separate groups, and which sit at the edge.
Method
- 1.Each scene is read for who is in it.
- 2.Characters who share a scene are joined, and the more scenes they share, the stronger the tie.
- 3.The network shows who is central, who connects groups and who sits at the edge.

Terms used in the report
- Partners
- The other characters this one shares at least one scene with. Network analysis calls the count degree centrality.
- Betweenness
- How often a character sits on the shortest path between two others. These are the story’s connectors and gatekeepers.
- Bridge character
- A character whose removal would split the network into groups that no longer meet.
- Group
- Characters who mostly share scenes with each other, such as a family or a crew.
